Charting a Course Through Academia: Francis Atta Sarpong’s Journey of Discovery
Exploring the boundaries of thought and navigating the vast seas of data, researchers like Francis Atta Sarpong use rigorous inquiry to decipher global patterns and illuminate uncharted territories with sparks of innovation. As a recipient of the prestigious "Academic ZUEL" Research Innovation Scholarship (Second Prize) for the third consecutive year, Francis embodies the international student who uses academic pursuit as a vessel to cross oceans of knowledge.
A PhD candidate in Finance (Class of 2022) from Ghana at ZUEL’s School of Finance, Francis arrived in Wuhan with more than just ambition. "I carried a deep desire to prove that one’s background should never limit academic excellence," he recalls. Now, in his final year, this latest scholarship marks a meaningful culmination of a demanding yet profoundly transformative journey.

The path was not without its challenges. Adapting to an intensive research culture, meeting the rigorous standards of top-tier international journals, and balancing high expectations required exceptional resilience. "The greatest challenge was adapting to the rigors of international academic publishing early on," Francis notes. He overcame this through persistent learning, treating each manuscript revision and rejection not as a setback, but as vital feedback to refine his methods and position his work within global scholarly debates.
His perseverance has yielded remarkable productivity. Throughout his PhD, Francis has authored or co-authored over 19 papers indexed in renowned SCI/SSCI/SCIE/EI journals, including Business Strategy and the Environment,Energy, and Resources Policy. Each publication, he states, "reflects a process of intellectual growth marked by setbacks, revisions, and continuous learning." Complementing his research, his role as a peer reviewer for leading journals since 2023 has further honed his scholarly judgment.
Francis attributes his success to the supportive environment at ZUEL. He expresses deep gratitude to his supervisor, Professor Gu Lulu, "whose rigorous mentorship, patience, and unwavering belief in my potential consistently pushed me beyond my limits." He also acknowledges the university’s world-class academic ecosystem and the sense of belonging it provides for international scholars.
Looking forward, Francis aspires to a career at the intersection of academia and policy, focusing on sustainable finance and evidence-based policymaking for developing economies, particularly in Africa. For fellow students curious about research, his advice is to "start small and start early."
"Research begins with curiosity, not perfection," he advises. "Seek mentors, welcome feedback, and do not fear rejection—it is part of the process. With persistence and discipline, research becomes both achievable and rewarding."
To Francis, this scholarship is more than an accolade; it is a reminder that "perseverance, humility, and purpose can transform opportunity into lasting impact."
